Creating Uncomfortable Challenges

A few months ago I was listening to talk radio when the host mentioned his view of work, “if you’re not uncomfortable, you’re not growing.” This statement caused me to pause and think about the “uncomfortable” challenges in my work history. Those times that I changed employers, took on a new role, added managerial responsibilities, and managed new areas of the business. Times of greater stress to be sure, but these were also the times in my career that development quickened.

Now think about your own career path, what were your uncomfortable challenges? What were the lessons learned? If you hadn’t experienced your uncomfortable challenges would you be at a disadvantage now? What new uncomfortable challenges can you create for yourself? What are the uncomfortable challenges you can create for your direct reports?
