5 Tips for Selecting an Executive Coach

Whereas coaching was once viewed as a remedy for an organization’s “problem employees,” today organizations are using coaching to hold onto and improve their very best leaders.  But if you are looking for a coach, how do you go about finding the right one?  Below are 5 tips to help you select the coach that is right for you:

1.    Look for good fit. One of the key ingredients to a successful coaching relationship is the chemistry/fit between the coach and client – ask for a “complimentary session” to help determine the coaches style.

2.    Ask about methodology.  What is their process? Will they interview others? What other instruments do they use? Be wary of a coach that cannot articulate how they work with clients.

3.    Discuss expectations, roles/responsibilities, accountabilities, etc. The coach should be able to discuss how they approach action planning, roles in the process, confidentiality, expectations, monitoring progress, and building trust.

4.    Ask probing questions of your prospective coach during the interview/selection process.  Some examples include: Describe your coaching methodology – process, tools, resources, time commitments, accessibility. Describe how you measure success? Tell me about a coaching success story. What made it a success?

5.    Ask for testimonials and/or references from existing and past clients. Look for tangible and intangible benefits and rewards.  As results-driven coach will provide you with proven success stories as an indicator of your future success.
