When Reflecting, Focus on the Positive

“You’ve done it before and you can do it now. See the positive possibilities. Redirect the substantial energy of your frustration and turn it into positive, effective, unstoppable determination.”
–Ralph Marston

This is the time of year when it is common to reflect back on the year that was. We examine our personal and professional lives…we look at our relationships and friendships…we pause to take stock of what we’ve accomplished and what remains.

If you are like many, this starts out as an exercise to examine the past and explore possibilities for the upcoming year. It might be a thought process, a journaling activity, or a dialogue with a trusted friend or colleague. For many, this exploration can quickly erode to (self) criticism and feelings of disappointment. Instead of celebrating successes, we look at what didn’t get accomplished. Instead of acknowledging that we made choices, we criticize that we didn’t get it all done. We use words like could of, should of, or would of.

This year (if you are inclined to pause and ponder), I encourage you to change the language. Demonstrate appreciation and gratitude. Look back at the year, avoid judgment, and silence the inner critic. Harness this positive energy and determine how you will forge a path to fulfill your dreams and realize your potential.
