Leadership Past and Present

I like to look for leadership everywhere. I talked about that in a previous post, Observe Leadership in Action. It might be evident on a sports team, in the board room, or at a neighborhood gathering. Leaders and leadership traits emerge all the time; and, we can learn from those around us on a daily basis.

This past weekend I learned about leadership past and present. I had the privilege of accompanying the Badger Honor Flight to Washington D.C. Eighty-seven veterans flew from Madison, Wisconsin to/from Washington DC to visit the war memorials.

If you’re not familiar, the purpose of the Honor Flight Network is to ensure that WWII and terminally ill veterans from any war have the opportunity to see the memorials that have been erected in their honor. The Honor Flight Network provides all amenities to the veterans because of the sacrifices they have made for their country.

I was honored to be surrounded by so many leaders this past weekend. These men and women served their country with pride and honor. Not only did they demonstrate leadership in a variety of ways during the war, but they were the individuals who came back after the war and became the leaders of our cities and local communities; started businesses; served on boards and committees; and, educated the nation’s youth.

There was so much to be learned through questions, listening, observation, and even silence. Leadership was also apparent in how these men and women have adjusted to the often frequent struggles of old age. “Positive attitude” and laughter definitely prevailed. Finally, leadership was demonstrated through the behaviors and actions of the many volunteers who work to make these events hugely successful.

It was one of the best days I’ve ever experienced…I’m proud and humbled to have had the opportunity to be part of this wonderful event. And, I am appreciative of how it opened my eyes to leadership at its best.
