Telecommuting and the Millennial Workforce

Over the last several years, we have been hearing more and more from our clients about the new generation of employees, the Millennials. Among the unique attributes of this generation is the need to find fulfillment at work and in their personal lives – the proverbial work/life balance.

As many of us know, fulfillment in our personal lives often stems from the community we choose to live in. Many of the Millennials I’ve talked with have that same belief in the value of the community. One of the interesting conversations I continue to have with new college graduates is the need to first find a community to live in, then find the job. This is quite a departure from the traditional approach of finding the ideal job and moving to that community. So, what we may find in the future is that talent may be drawn to various communities. Or, Millennials may choose to live in their ideal community but find a job where they can telecommute.

How can your organization best take advantage of this trend? How can technology assist your organization in recruiting Millennials? How does the definition of work and management differ with a telecommuting workforce? What skills will leaders within your organization need to have in the future to manage Millennials?
